What is Lean Six Sigma?
Lean is a process or philosophy that has 5 key principles:
- Value – understand the value from the customers perspective and ensure that value is expressed in terms of the product or service. Lean teams constantly review their product offering from a customer perspective
- Map the Value stream – once you understand the value proposition, map all the steps in the process and define which steps are value add and which are non value adding
- Create flow – eliminate the “waste” from the value stream analysis and create an environment that runs smoothly and efficiently.
- Pull – the creation of a “pull” environment is centered around producing products based upon demand and not forecast. This reduces overheads, stock holding and work in progress.
- Seek perfection – finally continue to improve. Regular reviews of the value stream will always find additional benefits.
Over the years, Lean and Six Sigma have merged to complement their principles perfectly into what we know now as Lean Six Sigma.
